History
Founded in 1984, we are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit education and resource organization committed to helping parents with the challenges of raising healthy, happy children from infancy to adolescence. With our eleven Family Educators, we are able to address a wide variety of issues and concerns.
Over the past 25 years, Commonwealth Parenting has offered education to families in the Richmond area to enhance and strengthen parenting skills. With the guidance, encouragement and counsel of our Family Educators, communities are becoming stronger and more resilient. We have served approximately 40,000 families since 1984 and currently average 3,200 families per year. Description of services
Classes vary from one to three sessions, last sixty to ninety minutes each, and may be held during the day, at night, or on weekends. Our services give participants opportunities to learn about child development and get answers to parenting questions. Many also find support and friendship in an informal and entertaining setting.
Our Family Educators, who deliver the services, include guidance counselors, social workers, professional counselors and teachers. Classes are available for a modest fee at various city-wide locations, including the Bon Secours Center for Family Health in Innsbrook.
Our rapidly changing society and the absence of extended family can leave many families feeling alone and overwhelmed. We offer a variety of professional expertise on many aspects of family life. Our services are funded by individual donations, local business partnerships and foundation grants. In addition, the active leadership by the board of directors is critical to our continued success.
